Natural proteins often need to be engineered before being used in industrial processes or pharmaceutical products. Usually this is done by creating large numbers of random mutations in the protein using directed evolution technologies and picking up improved variants using a suitable screening system. Despite the recent accomplishments in directed evolution, several rounds of screening are necessary to achieve sufficient optimization improvement, which is often infeasible both experimentally and financially.
